Count of Unfilled Construction Jobs Jumps

The count of unfilled jobs in the overall construction sector increased significantly in December, even as hiring in the home building sector has grown. According to the BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) and NAHB analysis, the number of open construction sector jobs (on a seasonally adjusted basis) increased to 207,000 in December from 138,000 in November. The December estimate solidly beats the previous cycle high of 168,000 open positions set during March and represents the highest count of job openings since early 2007.   READ MORE...

Graduations Held For Carpentry Classes

The Alabama Home Builders Foundation recently held graduations for students completing its basic residential carpentry certificate courses that took place this fall at the Shelby County College and Career Center in Columbiana and the Limestone Career Technical Center in Athens.

The classes met twice a week throughout October and November. Thanks to the Foundation’s underwriting of the program, adult students were able to attend the classes free of charge. Through the program, they learned the fundan1entals of construction through classroom and hands-on work. Students completing the course earned a certification of completion and hours toward their National Center for Construction Education and Research certification.

Foundation Sponsors Team Design and Build Contest in Tuscaloosa

The Alabama Home Builders Foundation was among the sponsors for the first ever Team Design and Build contest held in Tuscaloosa in November. Six high school construction teams competed with the task of designing, constructing and wiring a building. The two-day event involved many of the skills needed to build a home. The first place winner was the learn representing the Etowah County Career Center. Second place went to the combined Holt High School/Walker County Center of Technology team and third place went to the team from the Montgomery Preparatory Academy for Career Technologies. AHBFoundation Launches Groundbreaking Plumbers Education Program

A new education program is equipping students to enter the plumbing workforce right out of high school, thanks to the efforts of the Alabama Home Builders Foundation. The Foundation partnered with the State of Alabama Plumbers and Pipe/Gas Fitters Examining Board to launch the groundbreaking initiative in the Madison County school system.

“This is the first program like this in the state of Alabama,” said David Wilcox, Executive Director for the Plumbers Board. “The concept of a full partnership between the plumbing industry and schools has never been done in our industry before.”
